For a coldwater tank a beginner would be better off with paradise fish or White Cloud Mountain Minnows. Goldfish are generally separated into Hardy and Fancy Varieties, Hardy varieties have a longer body and are faster swimmers. They also tend to grow larger, are less prone to genetic disorders and are the best choice for outdoor ponds. Fancy varieties have a shorter ‘Egg’ shaped body. They are more suited to aquariums as they are normally smaller growing, slower swimming fish that do not handle colder temperatures as well. Fancy variety, short bodied so is a slower swimmer, also grows to a smaller adult size. Good for protected outdoor ponds and for aquariums. Available in a range of colours including Red, White, Calico, Chocolate and mixed. Short bodied fish with a long fan tail and ‘Globe’ eyes and rich black colouring that gets darker with age. Really only suitable for aquaria as harder to see in a pond situation. Best kept with similar slower moving varieties of goldfish such as other Globe Eyes or lion head types. Short bodied fish with protruding eyes, these fish are a popular choice for aquaria as they are smaller growing and slower swimming. Best kept with other slower swimming fish. Longer bodied ‘Hardy’ type fish that has a marbled black, red, blue and white colouring. Best Suited to ponds but happy in longer tanks that allow them a good amount of swimming room. Short bodied fish with no dorsal fin, wide spread fan tail and very large head. The Lionhead develops a large growth on its head as it gets older known as a ‘Wen’.
It is an extremely slow and ungainly swimmer so is really only suitable for indoor aquariums. A short bodied Fantail type that has a head development called a Wen on its forehead. The most famous variety is the Red Cap Oranda which sports a bright red Wen on a white body. Best kept in Large indoor aquariums. Due to the highly selective nature of goldfish breeding there is always a large amount of fish that do not show the required characteristics for a specific type, yet in their own right are very nice fish. These get sold on as Nymphs. And depending on characteristics are suitable for a range of habitats. Paradise Fish (Macropodus opercularis) Max Size: 10cm Temp:14°C - 28°C pH:6.0 – 8.0 Extremely hardy interesting fish suitable for Cold water tanks or even in sheltered outdoor ponds. Does best in slightly warmer water around 20⁰C. Needs access to air as it can breath air through a special organ called a labyrinth. Can be aggressive so should be kept on its own or in groups of at least 5 in a well planted environment. White Cloud Mountain Minnow (Tanicthys albonubes) Max Size: 4cm Temp:14°C - 22°C pH:6.0 – 8.0 Stunning small fish suitable for a small coldwater setup. Is a bit too small to be kept with medium or larger goldfish but does well in some tanks. Very hardy, peaceful and attractive fish great for beginner aquarium keepers. Likes to be kept in a school of at least 5. Long Fin White Cloud Minnow (Tanicthys albonubes) Long finned variety of the common White Cloud Mountain Minnow. Suitable for a small coldwater setup. Likes to be kept in a school of at least 5.
