Thanthoni Kolathur in north Chennai has become the hub for ornamental fish trading in the country not because of any special policy of the State Government but because of efforts of individual entrepreneurship. When a few enterprising people started breeding varieties of fishes in the 1980s in the sprawling backyards of their homes, they did not imagine that Kolathur would one day be the destination for the fish trade in the country. Asked about the reasons for Kolathur being the destination for ornamental fish enthusiasts, B. Selvaraj, proprietor, Aquasstar, said the main reason was that the area was endowed with abundant fresh ground water sources and there was the perennial ‘Retteri' lake. Moreover, as ornamental fishes breed in different types of water and the water available at Kolathur has a balanced pH (Potential Hydrogen) value of 6 to 7.8, the business thrived.

At present, there are around 80 shops dealing in ornamental fishes, aquariums and fish accessories spread out on School Road and Mada Streets in Kolathur. Though India, particularly Chennai, is yet to exploit the ornamental fish business on a big scale with business transaction in Chennai being around Rs. 5 to Rs. 6 crore, the State Government could give a boost by setting up ornamental fish aqua park for research and development of this industry. S. Kannan, proprietor of Indian Ocean Aquarium, another big aquarium shop in the area, said that there are around 600 varieties of fishes available in the market with mollies, catfish, angel fish, giant gouramis and Indian Golden fish, are the fast moving fishes in the shops. Mr. Selvaraj said that having an aquarium wase not once a favourite hobby among the people because of the cumbersome procedures involved in maintaining the fish, but the advent of imported fish tanks, accessories, fish foods and fish medications and a reasonable cost of maintaining a fish tank have made people opt for aquariums than maintaining pets.
