Although there are many different sizes of fishtank stands for sale, the 55 gallon size seems to be one of the more popular sizes.  There are many reasons for this with the main one being that it is not too big but also not too small at the same time.  It can be used for more aggro fish like African Cichlids or for smaller fish as well.  When it is full of water it weighs in at a whopping 550 pounds.  This means that you can’t simply stick it on a table or it will break, you must get a proper tank stand. Overall there are 3 different types of  fish tank stands that you have to consider before making a purchase.  They are metal, wood and mixed media.  Some kinds are cheap, some are more expensive.  Each has it’s own features and they are used for different purposes which we will go over below. If you want the tank stand to match your furniture or room then wood is an excellent choice.  It will add a nice touch to almost any room.  Other benefits are that some models will come with a built in cabinet and drawers combo to store stuff in.  

Also there are a lot of different varieties in this type.  It works well with acrylic tanks and provides good support for them. On the other hand there are some drawbacks of wood stands for 55 gallon tanks.  The main one is that not all types of wood do well with moisture.  You need to make sure that the wood has a good finishing on it to prevent damage.  We would recommend getting a wood stand that is made with MDF (medium density fiberboard) over particle board.  The reason for this is that particle board will eventually fall apart if exposed to enough moisture!  We don’t have to tell you that would be a disaster for your pet fish. Metal stands are one of the most popular choices.  The reason for this is that they are very affordable among many other benefits.  You must only use these with glass tanks though, because the design supports the edges of the tank which is not good enough for acrylic tanks.  If you do decide to get a metal aquarium stand then make sure that it is treated for corrosion properly or it could end up rusting and causing huge issues.  

A negative point for the metal ones is that they don’t have the storage space that the other ones often do. Mixed media tank stands are more expensive than the other options which puts people off a bit.  However they are still a good investment as they support acrylic tanks very well and generally look very good.
