A pH meter, also called a sensor or tester, is a device used to measure the acidity or alkalinity of a substance. A pH meter has either a portable or a benchtop body. Many portable meters are handheld devices. Some testers have an internal sensor, and may have a tip and body that fit inside of a container for measurement. A meter is commonly used in many different environments from laboratories to field research and manufacturing facilities.
Researchers, manufacturers, and hobbyists use a pH meter in aquaculture, agricultural, wine-making, and water-testing, and for scientific applications. Some pH meters may measure additional parameters such as dissolved oxygen (DO), conductivity (also called electro-conductivity or EC), temperature, total dissolved solids (TDS), salinity, resistivity, or oxygen reduction potential (ORP)/mV.Milwaukee Instruments manufactures electrochemical instrumentation and solutions for water analysis under the Milwaukee and Martini brands. There is also a cleaning solution which will eventually be necessary.PH meters frustrate me. Different brands have different "dos and don'ts." This one seems to say the pen should be stored in tap water. Others say distilled water. Most say never use distilled water at all. Some say rinse in distilled.I kept mine resting in filtered (bottled drinking) water.
But, after 6 weeks it went bonkers. It wouldn't settle on a reading. I let it dry out for 12 hours, rehydrated, and the meter works fine again. I'm now using storage solution. The meter is more stable now.So, what I do is rinse the meter in tap water before using (to remove the storage solution). Go to test solution (or calibration solution). Rinse in tap water. Put it back in the cap (perhaps adding 2-3 drops of storage solution to make up for what I rinsed off).Personally, I prefer BestDealUSA PH-009. It's essentially the same meter for less than half the price. Even better, buy both meters so you have a backup if one fails. Having both also helps you detect if your meter is behaving oddly. (Something to compare to).Note: It's been a month or so since I wrote the above. The Milwaukee PH600 began to be slow reaching the final value. I read somewhere this means (generally, for all meters) that the probe needs cleaning. I had bought Oakton cleaner a month ago. So, I filled a shot glass and let the meter set in it for 12-14 hours.
