I don't have any live plants so I wouldn't be able to tell you about that. The lack of a timer is a bummer, but there are some solutions. Most who put a timer on this unit probably do so at the outlet, which eliminates the use of the "moon glow". With some knowledge and a few parts I plan on having two timers one for two or three main LEDs, and another for the two moon glow LED's.Update: I installed a timer system Amico DC 12V Digital LCD Power Programmable Timer Time Switch Relay 16A Amps I bought two, one for the "moon glow" and the other for the main LEDs, I also picked up CCTV DC 5.5mmx2.1mm Power Pigtail Female Male Cord Lead 5 Pairs Black for the power wires needed.
