Letting the light inIn August we consolidated our San Diego offices into this headquarters building, which was once a chip manufacturing facility. We retrofitted it so that it has an industrial, urban park feel. There’s a large open area in the middle and 10 connection zones, or collaboration hubs, to appeal to modern workers. We also added windows along the perimeter, skylights and solar tubes so that the majority of light is natural. My office looks out onto the administrative support staff area and a fish tank that serves as a metaphor for the building’s transparency and the link between pets and nature. We also have other pets throughout the building that are for sale in our stores, such as snakes, frogs, lizards and chameleons.

About a third of employees bring their pets to work. I bring my French bulldogs Gerti and Leo with me about three days a week. The animals become part of our routine. We think it adds to the environment, and it’s a definite draw in recruiting. I bring my dogs’ lunch to work in an insulated carrier. They eat raw frozen meat and dehydrated human-grade food that we sell in our stores. The meat is either chicken, turkey, duck or rabbit.

They’re from one of our suppliers and are all natural. I also grab some and put them in my pockets when I leave the office, for pets I run into. As a merchant and marketer, I’m attentive to trends to know what we should feature in our stores. I love to bring in the toys we’re developing for our private brand, Leaps and Bounds. I have a focus group of two. As soon as my dogs arrive at the office, they visit the basket of toys.

I have photo of a sailboat in my office that reminds me of my youth. I grew up sailing for pleasure and then got into racing. Sailing taught me about connecting with nature, and racing taught me about strategy. As a mix of art and science, racing also helped me in business. In both cases, you operate in an environment where forces are often out of your control, and you have to use the tools you have and work as a team to succeed.I didn’t realize my 10-year-old calculator is old-school until a colleague told me. I know there’s a calculator on my cellphone, but it’s easier to rely on old habits.I have white notebooks on my credenza that hold the minutes of our last eight or 10 presentations to the board of directors. I use them as a reference. When I was the chief merchant at Dick’s Sporting Goods, I worked on a project with Nike to introduce high-end football cleats used by professional and college athletes to the high school market. The Nike staff knew I went to the University of California, Berkeley, and gave me a team football helmet as a thank-you.

5. Stepping up to the plateI learned early in my career that you can’t take the emotional baggage from one meeting into the next because the new group wants you to engage with them and leave the last conversation behind. In a former office I had a hat to remind me to change hats. We sponsor Petco Park, home of the San Diego Padres, where the bat, which is engraved “Petco,” is from. I keep the bat by the door. It reminds me I’m stepping up to the plate for a new group when I change meetings. Correction: March 6, 2016The family of a 10-year-old-boy who died from rat bite fever is now suing Petco for the boy's death. Aiden Pankey died last summer from rat bite fever, a disease reportedly carried by a rodent purchased from a Petco in San Diego, Calif., according to the San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office. The family, as a result, filed a lawsuit and is now waiting for a response from the national company. "He was such a good care taker and so loving," Sharon Pankey, the boy's grandmother, told ABC News.

"The dilemma is that taking care of the rat and wanting her to have a family ultimately lead to him dying." (Credit: Gomez Trials Attorney) The boy and his grandmother went to the pet store on Memorial Day last year to buy a companion for his pet rat Oreo. The family called it their "the summer science project." Two weeks after buying the male rat, the boy was struck with what his grandmother called "flu-like symptoms" and died over the course of 48 hours. She described the moments before his death as "numbing" and "soul biting." "I put him to bed after a day at the doctor's office and the next thing I knew it just was too late," she said. "I went into his room and he couldn't speak. He was unstable on his feet. I got him down to my room and he collapsed on the floor. I called 911 because it was scaring me that his breathing was shallow and he seemed to be losing his ability to function." The San Diego Medical Examiner's office said in a report issued to ABC News that "despite aggressive resuscitative efforts, death was pronounced."

"We didn't know what he died from at first," Sharon said. "When I took him to doctor he said he had the flu, but you don't die from flu in less than 48 hours." She said that it wasn't until Christmas - more than six months after the boy's death - that the medical examiner reportedly confirmed to the family that Pankey had died from the infectious disease. Hamilton Arendsen, the family's lawyer, told ABC News that his client is suing Petco for failing to have sufficient procedures in place to prevent incidents like this to occur. "Obviously the family is devastated," said Hamilton Arendsen. "This was an all-around great ten year old boy doing everything ten year old boys like to do. He loved his friends, loved his family, and loved playing with animals. One day he was doing what normal 10-year-old boys do and the next day he is dead." A general manager at Petco who would not identify themselves briefly commented on the incident and said they are waiting to receive more information before commenting further.
