But that hasn’t stopped a couple of South African social entrepreneurs from making it fit inside a 12-metre shipping container.Alan Fleming, director of The Business Place, an entrepreneur development and assistance organisation in Philippi, Cape Town, has designed a fully functional shipping container fish farm that he describes as “profitable, affordable, repeatable, transportable, lockable and stackable”.Fleming, who has been developing the project along with gardener-turned-aquaculturist Lungile Mafilika, says the Fish Farm is a “simple business opportunity capable of producing four tons of fish a year”.

The Fish Farm is on a final shortlist of 23 “technical solutions for basic supply problems” that are in line to win the inaugural “empowering people Award”, a competition launched by German-based organisation Siemens Stiftung at the UN Summit for Sustainable Development in Rio de Janeiro in 2012.Over 800 entries from around the world were submitted for the award, which aims to “connect innovations for basic supply problems in developing countries with potential partners, investors and other key players in development work”.The winner will be announced in Nairobi, Kenya on 30 October.Fleming recently outlined the Fish Farm’s costs in an interview with Anton Crone on the blog Bright Continent, saying: “This prototype cost R150 000 (US$18 750). The next prototype should cost less, and produce four tons of fish per year, at a net profit … of R36 000 ($4 500) per year.“I’m trying to reach a situation where it gives four people (or maybe one family) an income and/or high quality protein, right where they live.“

Jennifer Lampe, 28, drank seven cans of lager and shots of whisky and amaretto before beheading her two pet snakes – a bull python and a 2-metre boa constrictor – during a heated row with her sister, Mirror reported.She said she killed the snakes in fear that she would be made homeless and would be unable to look after them.Police discovered her covered in blood, draped in the headless boa constrictor and found the two severed reptile heads in her pant pockets.She attempted to hide the evidence by swallowing the heads after police were called but vomited them back up, telling the RSPCA officers that she wanted to keep the heads.Lampe also told the officers that she found the python’s head easier to swallow than the larger boa constrictor, according to Mirror.Daily Mail reported that vets said the snakes would have suffered a prolonged, painful death after their heads were cut off.
