Discovery Channel and Animal Planet are “the rotting carcass of science television.” They jumped the shark years ago; their fake documentary about Megalodon, a prehistoric shark extinct for millions of years, is just the latest failure. Reaction from marine scientists has been swift and brutal; even Snopes got in on the churn.  Unfortunately, most of Shark Week’s audience doesn’t seem to know what they are seeing is bogus. This week, Discovery upped the fakery another notch, creating a false news report of a bull shark in Lake Ontario:Summer swimming activities can resume as normal. Discovery wants to quell the concerns of Canadians everywhere and reveal that the widely-circulated video of a shark swimming in Lake Ontario is, in fact, not a real shark. The video of the incredibly life-like prosthetic model shark is the first stage of a multi-level marketing campaign tied to the channel’s iconic summer event, SHARK WEEK.” Ontario Natural Resources Minister Bill Mauro issued a warning to the public before the video was revealed as fake.

Apparently enough Canucks were freaked out by the video that Discovery had to bring us all in on the joke early. The hoax wasted valuable time of real scientists and conservationists, who had to respond to public and media information requests, as well as try to verify the report. I agree with Deep Sea News: SHARK WEAK. It’s puzzling that Discovery chooses to create fake after fake, when there are real, critical, and interesting stories to be told. What IS in the Great Lakes? A Pacu, a relative of Piranhas known as the “ball nipper,” was captured in Lake St. Clair Michigan this week. The pacu is found occasionally all through the United States, and apparently are captured about “every other year” in Michigan. Will these fish really eat your balls? The evidence is mixed, at best. Danish Museum Scientist Henrik Carl said of this fish: “The pacu’s mouth is not so big, so of course it normally eats nuts, fruit, and small fish, but human testicles are just a natural target.

Pacu are are billed as “vegetarian pirañas”; they are easy to keep and maintain, and look really cool. Those teeth are seriously freaky. The problem is pacu grow; they can get up to 90cm in length. This is much bigger than most of us can deal with in a home aquarium. Some idiots solve the problem by dumping their exotic fish into the nearest body of water, and an invasive species begins to spread. Pacu are just one of many exotic species of fish that are found regularly in the Great Lakes, and that pose real threats to this critical freshwater ecosystem. Many of our issues with invasive species of fish (and other animals) are caused by people releasing pets.

The Aquarium trade is responsible for a third of introductions of non-native species to our waterways. When the fish released are predators like pacu, snakeheads, or lionfish, the results can be catastrophic for smaller fish and ecosystems. You know what would be useful, Discovery Channel? If you made a show about the REAL issues we face from invasive species, and helped educate people about the consequences of releasing non-native species.
