This blog originates from a question I posted into the forum about the correct filter medium placement in my Top Fin 10 Power Filter. The advice given to me by other expert members should be easily transferable to other filter types, makes and models, and hopefully clarify this issue especially for the beginner aquarium hobbyist, like me ;-) The Top Fin 10 Power Filter filter comes with a holder unit for the sponge (=mechanical filter, explained below) and the carbon cartridge (=combined biological & chemical filter, as well explained below). This holder is inserted into the filter chamber. There are two ways to insert the holder, which affects the order the water flows through the filter mediums. Please have a look at the pictures, they illustrate the two different ways to insert the filter cartridge. The correct way is seen in PICTURE 2. Pic 1: Water flows first through carbon cartridge, then through sponge, then back into tank. Pic 2: Water flows first through sponge, then through carbon cartridge, then back into tank.
This is valid for most types of filtration systems you can buy, regardless of make and model. It is based on these 3 types of filtration principles: Water should always flow through the mechanical filtration first. This part of the filter catches large chunks that may clog up the filter. Sponges can be rinsed in change water every couple of months, but no more frequently than monthly. Other types of mechanical filtration include filter floss, filter wool or pads. Biological media should always be placed after mechanical media. This is where your beneficial bacteria will colonize. Biological media comes in many forms; pads, ceramic rings, bio balls, even sand. The more surface area and porosity, the more room for bacteria to colonize. The bacterial colony is what will convert those harmful compounds and make the water safe for your fish. **It is important to note that mechanical and biological media do not need to be replaced unless they is falling apart.
