BELGRAVE LINE TO CLOSE FOR CROSSING REMOVALSRare and valuable fish in the tank were saved but Mr Iliov said one priceless animal, a shovelnose catfish, died after being moved to a smaller tank.media_cameraThe shop’s sodden carpets.media_cameraThe explosion flooded the shop.Mr Iliov had to close the shop for two days after the flooding to clean up.He wants compensation from the Level Crossing Removal Authority for the loss of the tank and other stock and equipment, including cabinets.Mr Iliov said he sent the authority video footage of the tank, which he has had for seven years, exploding.“Everyone that I’ve had had a look at it (including tank experts) have said they have never seen a tank like this just blow it, it doesn’t just happen,” Mr Iliov said.Mr Iliov fears his smaller tank could also crack, despite the authority putting polystyrene around it to protect it.He has been told his claim for compensation is now with the authority’s legal team.Mr Iliov said he was “ haemorrhaging money” after the loss of the tank, and a huge drop in customer numbers due to the level crossing works.
Station St has been closed to traffic since early this month and won’t reopen until mid-December.He said he may be forced to move his business, which has been in its current spot for 35 years.RAIL AUTHORITY PAYS FOR NEIGHBOURS TO RELOCATE“My choice is to move and continue to keep (my customers), and then I can grow the business, or stay here and whittle away and die,” Mr Iliov said.Bayswater state Liberal MP Heidi Victoria called on the authority to compensate Mr Iliov.Ms Victoria said businesses had been hit hard by the level crossing removal works, and some owners had been forced to take out second mortgages to survive.Level Crossing Removal Authority project director Graeme Chambers said the cause of the damage was being investigated.Mr Chambers said if the work was found to be responsible for the damage the authority would pay for repairs.Meanwhile, the authority won’t close Scoresby Rd and Mountain Highway at the same time this weekend.Flashing variable message signs this week warned drivers that both roads could be closed this weekend but the authority announced yesterday that only Scoresby Rd would be closed.
