The sort of yarn a fisherman would deliver to barflies at a tavern about the urban legend of the giant fish lurking in the local lake.But this fishing yarn is true.On Friday, Angling expert Karl Langdon told Radio 6PR a monster Murray River cod was plucked from the Sanctuary Waters council lake in Canning Vale last week.He said after rumours of a massive cod living in the lake surfaced, Murdoch University Fresh Water Fish group and the Department of Fisheries started electro-fishing.But instead of the tale of the one that got away, a 15-kilogram cod came bobbling to the surface. There were also rumours that a woman living adjacent to the lake was feeding the fish dog biscuits, which Langdon said could explain its whopping size."
Whether this fish has been enjoying a diet of dog biscuits, or whether enjoying other local fare... maybe small ducks that have lobbed on the lake, that have found themselves inside of a cod," he said.And like all good fishing yarns, Langdon said there could be a bigger cod at the bottom of the lake.He said the fish could fetch a fair price, after popping on Gumtree and finding a 20cm Murray River Cod was selling for around $20."My understanding is there is a bigger one and there are bigger ones in stagnant waterways around Perth," he said."It's something that has been going on for years."Langdon said there was a sinister side to the story, as the cod could be dining out on local fauna."They not only eat fresh water crayfish, yabbies, shrimps, water fowl, small mammals, and other reptiles," he said."I went on FishWrecked [local fishing forum] and there is a number of different posts on here saying there is a spot off Roe Highway, where there is monster Murray Cod."It has something of a game which is why the Fisheries Department has become involved."
