fish in aquarium died

Dead fish kept in a barrel. A barrel at the fag end of the recently-renovated Taraporevala Aquarium at Charni Road has more than 50 imported fish, but they are not on display. These are dead fish kept in a barrel. Within the first five months of renovation, around 700 fish on display have died at the aquarium. The mortality figure at the aquarium between February and June stands at 696. According to the recent monthly report of the aquarium, while the fish stock in February was 2,522, the closing stock in June was 1,988 fish. Officials, however, say the fish deaths are not an unusual phenomenon and around 10 per cent fish die every month because of “environmental factors”. Environmental factors, according to Rajendra Jadhav, Joint Commissioner of Fisheries (Inland), includes loud sounds and camera flashes by unruly visitors — both of which are advised against on signboards at the aquarium. Officials continue to dismiss the possibility that the filtration system was faulty.

The filtration system, authorities claim, has sponges, UV irradiation facilities, charcoal and biofilters to remove all impurities. The “revamped” aquarium had reopened on March 3, two years after it was shut for modernisation at a cost of Rs 22 crore. The Indian Express had earlier reported that within two weeks of its reopening, at least a hundred marine fish had died. In the first two months, secretary at the Animal Husbandry Department Mahesh Pathak explained away the deaths as “teething trouble” for the new aquarium. “It is not possible to replicate the exact sea conditions inside a tank for these exotic fish, which are being brought for the first time to this aquarium and even the department does not have enough experience in handling them. We have spoken to experts and are trying to feed the fish anti-allergens and are maintaining the pH level to get the new fish accustomed to water in the tank,” Pathak had earlier stated. But the data suggests that the maximum deaths took place in May (220 deaths) and in June when around 162 fish had died, according to the official report.

When contacted, Suvarna Sakpal from Utekar Fisheries claimed that in the beginning, fish die because they are not used to the new pool, but now they are fine. The fisheries department will now begin the process of calling e-tenders for a contractor for fish feed and upkeep of the tanks, said Fisheries Commissioner M B Gaikwad, who claims that the e-tenders are being called for because the current contract with Utekar Fisheries is coming to an end and denied any problems with the contractor.
