During the interview Friday, Covino was more blunt, dismissing Corcoran's claims as "pure fiction." "That so-called death-log was obviously made up," he said. "Anyone can read it for themselves. It included citations saying snails were dying of congestive heart failure and that other species were dying because of depression. It's still a shame they decided to print a story they knew was not true." The Oregon Humane Society, which helps enforce state animal-cruelty law, launched an investigation of the aquarium based on the leaked death log and other allegations made by former employees. The probe ultimately did not produce enough evidence to bring charges, Barbara Buagnon, the agency's communication's director, said. The company that owns the aquarium has run into problems else, where as well. Ammon Covino was arrested in 2013 for violating the conditions of his pretrial release in Florida. He'd been indicted in that state on charges of violating federal law by purchasing protected marine life in interstate commerce.

He was eventually convicted and sentenced to one year in prison.
