Skins & Needles on Linthorpe Road has been a permanent fixture for five years and has become known as a studio that has some of the most talented artists in the north of England working there.

The parlour has become so popular that their current building can no longer cope with demand and will now move to the old Yakuza store on the road, with some adventurous plans - including fish tanks in the floor. “I would only open the shop then if I felt everything was perfect, the event would still go ahead in the current shop or we could even push it back and have the event take place on the night in the new building.” Matthew has ambitious plans for the studio and hopes it can become a focal point for the area which is set to be regenerated in the coming years. As well as a bespoke tattoo parlour, Matthew wants the new premises to even have a cocktail bar and an in-house coffee shop in time for the summer, with all of the tattoo artists undertaking barista training. He said: “I’d love to have a cocktail bar and a roof terrace in here but they are just plans at the moment as everything would have to be approved by the council. “This place is probably going to be the biggest tattoo studio in the north of England and there’s going to be computer screens where customers can view our tattooist’s work. “I’m putting a fish tank in the floor and I’m in talks with a jewellery designer who will sell some of his work here. “

I’m always looking forward and wanting to create something different.” He added: “I want this place to be a community, people feel like they can’t hang around in tattoo studio’s but they can here. “They can come in and watch the artists work and have a drink and relax.” Last year’s Friday the 13th saw hundreds of customers queue up - with some arriving as early as 4am - for the annual event. Ward manager Pippa Smith recently contacted the team at Pets at Home Middlesbrough to see if they would help maintain the two fish tanks located in the children’s ward. Store manager Mark Deighton immediately offered to lend a hand and after an initial visit of the hospital to inspect the tanks, a maintenance programme was designed by the Pets at Home team. Colleagues from the Cleveland Retail Park store will now visit the ward fortnightly to undertake any necessary upkeep of the tanks. They will also be on hand should either of the tanks require emergency maintenance in between visits.
