Wigan Warriors are a club with the proudest tradition in the sport of Rugby League. With the magnificent DW Stadium, world-class training facilities, backing from some of Europe’s most successful businesses and the biggest fan base in the country, Wigan Warriors are truly a Club in the ascendancy. Fishtank Creative were approached in 2008 to manage the design, digital portfolio and develop the on-going trust of their target audience. Our partnership has now been in place for 7 years and Fishtank Creative are largely responsible for the concept development, digital strategy and marketing collateral. Over this time Fishtank Creative have worked on a diverse range of projects. These projects have varied from season ticket campaigns, match day creatives with additional marketing collateral to the production of illustrations and advertising campaigns for corporate hospitality and Warriors World. 2015 will also see the launch of the fully desktop, tablet and mobile responsive Wigan Warriors website, containing an integrated e-commerce and content management system.

As any great king, general, president or CEO knows, the secret ...to great leadership isn’t in knowing everything yourself and dictating to those around you, but in making the best use of the knowledge of the group. Every member of a community will have their own skills, strengths and areas of knowledge, and great leaders capitalise on this to make the group even stronger than the sum of its parts. Just as in business, battle or politics, the same holds true of fish. Indeed there’s a very good reason why fish often group together into schools, beyond the need for mutual protection. Scientists at St Andrews University in Scotland have discovered that while individual fish may only have a little bit of information about their environment, such as where to find food or how to access it, a school of fish will “pool” their resources and information to solve problems together much more quickly and efficiently. In experiments, shoals of stickleback fish were presented with a two-part problem in which they had to first find and then access some hidden food.

Shoals that contained “experienced” individuals (those that had been trained in each of the stages) fared far better than those without. In short, the presence of experienced fish greatly increased the likelihood of untrained fish completing each part of the problem. The findings could provide a great deal of inspiration for how businesses and institutions are organised. Perhaps even more excitingly, the lessons provided by the study could have a huge impact on the field of artificial intelligence, helping to develop behaviours for biologically-inspired swarms of robots or fleets of drones. With all the knowledge being shared then, perhaps it’s little wonder that a shoal of fish is also known as a school.
