For Sepang Today Aquaculture Centre Sdn Bhd managing director Khoo Eng Wah, 73, he is one of the few who has managed this rare feat. Khoo, who has been interested in fishes since young, operates a private aquafarming human resources development and training school in Sungai Pelek, Sepang. “I built my own cement tank in the 1960s to breed goldfish and fighting fish. I remember the joy of selling them in the morning market,” he said, adding that he sold them for about 50sen each and managed to sell about 1,000 fishes over five years while he was still a secondary school student. He pursued a degree in Biology in Singapore and subsequently took a postgraduate diploma in fisheries science.
His interest in ornamental fishes (for display in aquarium) later turned to breeding fish for consumption. Upon graduation he became an aquaculturist in Indonesia, involved with design and building a 10ha fish farm. “I saw the growing demand in Malaysia and returned home after two years to help over 10 companies set up and maintain their fish farms,” he said. He only became an entrepreneur when the last company he worked with was acquired by a property developer and his aquaculture division was shut down. “I was offered compensation and with the money, I purchased all the aquaculture equipment and rented a 4ha area in Tanjung Sepat, Selangor, from the property developer to continue in the aquaculture business,” he said. With his wife and nine workers, he set up the company in 1997 to operate the aquaculture business which involved breeding tiger prawns, tiger grouper and others. “In the aquaculture business there are pros and cons in selecting the type of species to breed,” Khoo said, adding that most choose prawns as they take about two to four months to harvest, compared to fishes which can take from eight to 11 months.
“However, prawns are more susceptible to diseases,” he said. Even so, the farm in general is also at the mercy of the weather where heavy rain could cause a total wipeout of various aquatic livestock. After about 10 years in the business, he decided to stop the open-air aquafarming business as it involved hard work and his children were not interested to continue work under the sun and rain. However, one of his sons was interested in aquaculture, and decided to develop a system for indoor aquafarming. “Before coming up with a marketable system, we were approached by a China manufacturer and it was a good stepping stone to learn more about such systems while marketing the product,” said Khoo. Seeing the potential, Khoo continued the business but focused more on consultation and developing indoor aquafarming solutions. He purchased a bungalow in Sepang and used it as his office and for aquafarming activities. With about 30 tanks, he had harvested over 3,000kg of fishes and prawns to date using the indoor aquafarming method and these produce are sold to fish suppliers.
