We recommend that you buy the largest tank you can afford and suitably house. Custom built tanks and bases are made on site, and we are happy to discuss this option with you. We are very competitively priced. Choose a position out of direct sunlight as it will turn the water green and may cause it to overheat (which may prove fatal). Place tank on its stand or flat surface. This must be capable of taking a considerable amount of weight when filled with water. Place clean gravel in tank (never use detergent to clean gravel). Place heater and filter in tank (these are available as one unit).

Fill tank with water and allow ten minutes before turning on heater (if using a submerged glass heater this should give the glass time to adjust to the water temperature). Turn on and install filter unit as per instructions then add water conditioners, and again let it sit for several minutes. After this add the chemicals to avoid clouding. Add water conditioner as per instructions (ideally you should have one to remove chlorine and heavy metals, one to add live bacteria kick starting your biological filter and one to lock your ammonia levels) Now give the tank time to heat, this can take anywhere from a few hours to a day depending on the volume of the tank. Avoid placing your tank in direct sunlight as this will cause it to turn green with algae. Ensure to check the pH levels, in case it needs altered (kits are available in store, and we can test for you if you bring a sample of your tank water in store with you). Allow your tank two days to settle before adding any fish (this will allow the beneficial biological bacteria to colonize in your filter system, helping to age your tank water and get it ready for fish)

Plants and Ornaments can be carefully added to your aquarium at your convenience. Rinse everything and place gravel on the bottom. Fill bowl with approximately 3/4 cold water, and add a little warm water to ensure it is the same temperature as the water your bagged fish are in (if purchased the same day), otherwise let water come up to room temperature naturally over night or a few days prior to bringing your fish home. Add the water conditioner (refer to label for instructions). Lastly add oxy-shells, plants and ornaments, remembering not to overcrowd the bowl. Never sit your bowl in direct sunlight as it will turn the water green and overheat, the latter of which may prove fatal. Ensure your pH is at the correct level for the fish you intend to keep. After purchasing your fish, float them in their bag for 15 minutes on the surface (to allow them to acclimatize to any temperature discrepancies). After 15 minutes, open the bag and let some of your tank water into the bag (50/50) to acclimatize them to any water quality discrepancies.

After 5-10 minutes open the bag and either catch the fish out with a net and add to the tank, discarding water in the bag (recommended), or simply release them straight from the bag to your tank water and all. Fish flakes, pellets, freeze dried and frozen foods are all available options depending on the type of fish purchased. Offer dry fish flakes (or similar) in the morning and frozen bloodworms in the evening. Please feed sparingly as overfeeding is one of the biggest killers of captive fish, and it will cause clouding and unwanted bacteria. This needs to be done regularly depending on the size of your tank and the type of filter installed. Generally though the minimum would be one-third of water changed monthly. Always ensure the water going in is at the same temperature as the remaining water. Use gravel cleaner for ease of cleaning. Replace water conditions and adjust P.H level. Change a small amount of water twice weekly, and a complete water change once a month.

For small changes fill a clean jug with water form the tap and add your water conditioners (as per instructions) and sit next to your bowl over night to allow it to come up to temperature naturally. Once water is at temperature, take another clean jug and remove a jug full of water from the bowl, then replace with your pre-treated clean water. For full water change, take a jug of water from the bowl. Using a net (never use a cup or jug etc as this may damage and bruise your fishes underside) catch all fish and place in the jug over water and sit aside. Carefully discard dirty water from the bowl and clean ornaments etc if needed (without using any detergents). Refill the bowl with approximately 3/4 cold water, topping with warm water (to bring back to a similar temperature to what is in your jug with the fish) using a thermometer is recommended Once you have the bowl set back up, catch your fish and place back in the bowl We would recommend putting a small amount of the water from the jug back in the bowl - as it has beneficial bacteria in it, and putting some of this back in the bowl will lessen the stress on the fish.
